Community Garden

Starting a container garden is a simple and rewarding way to

grow your own fresh, healthy food at home.

Begin by choosing containers with drainage holes; these can be pots, buckets, or even repurposed items. Fill them with nutrient-rich organic soil, then select your favorite heirloom seedlings. These plants are grown without chemicals and are perfect for patios, balconies, or small yard spaces.

Place your containers where they will get at least 6 hours of sunlight daily, water consistently, and enjoy the journey of homegrown goodness.

What to grow in containers: Lettuce, kale, Swiss chard, potatoes, tomatoes (dwarf or determinate), radishes, beets, bell peppers, hot peppers, bush beans, basil, lavender, sage, rosemary, and lemon balm.

"Steps to beginning container gardening:"

  1. Choose Your Location: Select a sunny spot that gets at least 6–8 hours of sunlight daily—like a porch, balcony, patio, or windowsill.
  2. Select Your Containers: Use pots, buckets, or recycled items with drainage holes. Make sure they are large enough for the plant’s root system.
  3. Use Quality Soil: Fill containers with high-quality organic potting mix. Avoid using garden soil, which can be too dense for containers.
  4. Pick Your Plants: Choose herbs, vegetables, or flowers that thrive in containers. Get healthy, organic heirloom seedlings for the best results.
  5. Plant and Space Correctly: Follow spacing guidelines for each plant. Do not overcrowd—give roots room to grow.

. Water Consistently: Container plants dry out faster, so water regularly - especially during hot weather. Ensure water drains freely from the bottom.

  1. Feed Your Plants: Use organic fertilizer every few weeks to keep plants nourished. Containers also need extra fertilizer, usually every 2 weeks.
  2. Monitor and Maintain: Watch for pests, prune as needed, and harvest regularly to keep your garden healthy and productive. Water frequently in the hottest months when the soil in pots will dry out quickly.

. Ask for Help: Reach out to me at Sustainable Learning Lab for guidance, tips, and seasonal plant recommendations. We have your heirloom seedlings, and can guide you every step of the way with expert advice and healthy plant starts! We accept all forms of payment.

. Take My Gardening Class! Gardening Class for Self- Sufficiency; Sunday, July 13, 8-10 am; Village Park, Ellenwood (750 Fairview Road)

Food

Looking for a new way to enjoy smoked brisket?Let me introduce you to Texas Twinkies — a must-try treat that’s taken on a life of its own in the barbecue world.

These smoky, savory bites start with chopped smoked brisket mixed into creamy, rich cream cheese. That tasty filling gets stuffed into big jalapeños, wrapped in thick-cut bacon, and smoked again until the peppers soften and the bacon turns perfectly crispy.

A sweet glaze of barbecue sauce finishes it off, creating a flavor explosion that’s hard to resist.

Sure, some people say it’s just another jalapeño popper — but once you try it, you’ll see why Texas Twinkies have earned a spot at the top of the menu. They’re the perfect way to use leftover brisket (if you’re lucky enough to have any!).

👉 Check out the recipe here from Urban Cowgirl: Texas Twinkies Recipe

Give it a try — and get ready for everyone to ask for seconds!

Restaurant recommendation: If you’re in the

mood for Southwestern food nearby, check ou Agave Restaurant. They’re located at

242 Boulevard SE, Atlanta, GA 30312.

DRIVING IN THE COMMUNITY

Please slow down! Be mindful we have children in our community so there is no room for speeders. There are also small pets who occasionally get loose and it is difficult to see them.

If you see speeding, correct it, or report it to the Henry County police. We must always keep the standards our community started off with over 25 years ago and that was to uphold the standard, safety, and appearance of our community.
